US President Donald Trump left China Friday without substantial advances on trade or concrete aid from Beijing to resolve the Iran war, despite two days of showering adulation on his host, Xi Jinping. Trump’s visit to America’s primary geopolitical and economic competitor, the first by a US president since his last trip in 2017, was aimed at tangible outcomes to bolster his sinking support ratings ahead of the mid-term elections.
The summit was loaded with spectacle, from goose-stepping troops to tours of a hidden garden, but behind closed doors Xi offered a harsh warning to Trump that any mismanagement of China’s primary priority, Taiwan, might spiral into warfare.
Trump, heading back to the US, told reporters in a huddle that Xi had told him he opposed Taiwan independence. I listened to him. “I didn’t make a comment, I didn’t make a commitment either way,” Trump replied. He said he will decide quickly on a pending arms sale to Taiwan after talking to “the person who is running Taiwan right now.
