Based on the Federal Decree-Law on the Regulation of the Telecommunications Sector, as amended, the Board of Directors of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) has declared that Emirates Telecommunications Group Company PJSC (e&) and Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company PJSC (du) have renewed their public telecommunications licenses for an additional 20 years.
The 2006 licenses will be replaced by the renewed licenses, which will be valid from August 9, 2026, until August 8, 2046. The industry now has a long-term regulatory framework thanks to the renewal, which gives it the stability needed to continue investing in digital infrastructure and emerging technologies. The telecom industry has changed over the last 20 years from offering conventional services to being a key facilitator of government services, digital transformation, and smart cities. According to the most recent international data, the UAE has continued to dominate the world in household fiber-optic network penetration, ranking first for the eleventh year in a row with a penetration rate of 99.7%.
The national economy’s infrastructure depends on telecommunications networks in all essential areas, including government services, financial services, healthcare, education, energy, transportation, industry, and digital commerce, according to Talal Belhoul, Chairman of TDRA. The Digital Economy Strategy, which intends to double the digital economy’s GDP contribution from 9.7% in 2022 to 19.4% over the next 10 years, makes the next phase even more crucial.Additionally, it is anticipated that the industry will progressively move from linked networks to autonomous, intelligent networks, where artificial intelligence will become a crucial component of the network’s intelligence.
