At least 95 people were murdered in Nepal on Wednesday after a major flood tore across the border region with Tibet. Verified footage showed dozens of people being swept away at the border in an ongoing tragedy, and authorities on both sides feared much greater losses and extensive damage. In Nepal, homes, roads, and power projects were destroyed, and Tibetan officials reported that they feared “major casualties,” with some residents in the county of Gyirong going missing when a mudslide struck a border land crossing.

Nepal’s foreign minister, Shisir Khanal, told the nation’s parliament on Wednesday that preliminary assessments suggested an earthquake in the region may have caused an avalanche and the floods, according to local media. On the Chinese side of the Nepal-Tibet border, security footage showed a large number of people escaping before a flood of rock, mud, and water damaged buildings, cars, and many lives. Flood alerts were issued in the populous northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which border Nepal and have multiple rivers flowing down the mountains into the plains, due to the deluge of dirty water coming down from an estimated almost 2,000 meters (6,560 feet) above sea level.
