Less than three weeks after the business was told to halt access to its most sophisticated Fable and Mythos AI models due to national security concerns, Anthropic announced on Tuesday that the US Commerce Department had removed export restrictions on those models. In response to worries that military intelligence in China, Russia, or other countries of concern would abuse sophisticated AI models, Washington has increased control of new model releases to uncover potential dangers.
Due to the inability to check nationality in real time, Anthropic disabled both models for all users in response to a June 12 order directing the business to immediately block access for Mythos 5 and Fable 5 to foreign nationals. The US government permitted the business to release Mythos 5 last week, but only to a select group of “trusted” US organizations. As part of its Glasswing initiative, the model, which is intended to identify cybersecurity weaknesses, was previously made accessible to a wider range of businesses.
After protections were put in place, Anthropic said on Tuesday that all export restrictions on the models had been removed. According to a blog post, it is collaborating with the US government to make Mythos 5 available to a wider range of domestic and foreign partners in the Glasswing program. Fable 5, which has more robust safeguards and is meant for the general public, will be accessible starting on Wednesday. Anthropic, which has had a difficult relationship with the administration of US President Donald Trump this year, also said that it is strengthening its partnership with the US government by granting designated government partners greater early access to both of its models.
