After severe flash floods in Nepal, over thirty British individuals are still unaccounted for. According to government estimates provided on Friday, the devastating floods killed over 500 people and left hundreds more unaccounted for.
In the midst of a “very distressing and devastating situation,” the UK has provided the Nepalese government £5 million, according to Andy Burnham. The prime minister also stated that the relatives of missing Britons will receive “all the support we can” from the government.
A local politician reported that 33 Britons were still unaccounted for following flooding in the Rasuwa district, which borders China’s Tibet region. Sarada Simkhada, a senior nurse at Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford, was among them.
Another Slough-based Briton is reportedly missing as well. Among the missing and suspected dead is a family from Surrey. Spandan Sahu, 18, was in Nepal with his mother, Surabhi Manmath Padhy, 44, sister, Syna Kumari Sahu, 13, and father, Santosh Sahu, 46, chief executive of the UK pharmaceutical technology business Charac. In Devighat, Nuwakot district, on Saturday, a woman pulls a trolley bag that was recovered from a ruined home following mudslides and flash floods.
