As a change of administration in Hungary broke months of delay, foreign ministers of the European Union agreed on Monday to impose further sanctions on Israeli settlements for their aggression against Palestinians. When the green light was announced, EU senior diplomat Kaja Kallas commented, “It was high time we move from deadlock to delivery.” “Violence and extremism have repercussions.” The EU is “sanctioning the main Israeli organizations guilty of supporting the extremist and violent colonization of the West Bank, as well as their leaders,” according to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.

He posted on social media, “These most serious and intolerable acts must cease without delay.” Viktor Orban, the former prime minister of Hungary, had halted the action in response to growing violence and settlement growth in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. However, it now seems that Peter Magyar’s removal of the nationalist leader and Israel ally cleared the path for the veto to be lifted. Seven settlers or settler organizations will be placed on a blacklist, according to EU officials. Additionally, the bloc decided to impose sanctions on Hamas representatives.

Israel claimed that Jews have the right to reside in the occupied West Bank and denounced the new restrictions. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar wrote on X, “The European Union has chosen, in an arbitrary and political manner, to impose sanctions on Israeli citizens and entities because of their political views and without any basis.” Since the beginning of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, Israeli troops and settlers have engaged in nearly daily bloodshed throughout the occupied West Bank. Since the beginning of the Iran war on February 28, Israeli settlers have increased their lethal attacks in the West Bank, according to Palestinian leaders and the UN.
