South Korea’s spy service revealed on Thursday that the daughter and presumed successor of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is thought to have a younger brother, providing a more thorough understanding of the ruling family’s succession plan. Kim is believed to have three children, according to Seoul’s spy agency, however there is still some doubt about the exact number of children and their birth order. The closed-off country is currently ruled by the Kim dynasty, which is in its third generation. The offspring of the present leader may one day assume power.
Kim Jong Un attends the destroyer “Kang Kon” commissioning ceremony at Wonsan Port with his daughter Kim Ju Ae. Kim Ju Ae, Kim’s daughter, had her public debut in 2022 when she went to an intercontinental ballistic missile launch with her father. At first, Seoul had said that Kim and his wife Ri Sol Ju had a boy as their first child in 2010 and that Kim Ju Ae was their second. However, the government was “unable to confirm” the son’s existence, according to Seoul’s unification minister in 2023.
The youngest would be the child that South Korea’s spy agency described on Thursday. The National Intelligence Service reiterated its finding on succession, saying, “The National Intelligence Service currently assesses that Kim Ju Ae is being groomed as the successor and understands she has a younger sibling of unknown gender.”
