In a bold early-morning raid on Sunday, only months after a spectacular gem heist at the Louvre in Paris, burglars seized jewelry valued at millions of euros from the museum of French luxury glassmaker Lalique. A source close to the investigation informed the media that a group of masked robbers got into the museum in Wingen-sur-Moder, northeastern France, at around 5:30 am (0330 GMT). They forced a door before going to the jewelry area and shattering open six display cases.

Twenty or so items of jewelry were taken. The source stated, “The loss is currently being assessed but could amount to several million euros, probably close to four million.”
According to a second person with knowledge of the investigation, the pilfered jewelry was made of crystal, included no valuable gems, and could not be melted. Due to the burglary, the museum will be closed for a few days, according to their website. The first investigative source stated, “An alarm went off, but by the time the security company finished its checks, it was a cleaning lady who arrived first on the scene and called the police.”
