By the end of 2026, Gulf Cryo, the biggest supplier of liquid CO2 in the area, plans to dramatically increase its capacity to produce CO2 in the region from 700 metric tonnes per day (MTPD) to 1,300 MTPD, or more than 470,000 metric tonnes yearly. By the end of the year, capacity in the UAE will reach 200 MTPD, or about 73,000 metric tonnes per year, with the option to increase by an additional 150 MTPD as needed. The expansion is based on a number of long-term carbon capture and recovery projects in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates, which strengthens Gulf Cryo’s capacity to satisfy present and future market demand while guaranteeing a steady supply of CO2 for various industries.
With the support of long-term carbon capture and recovery projects, each local market is first secured by its own production, with the larger regional network serving as a backup during plant turnarounds, seasonal peaks, or upstream disruptions. When the market demands it, Gulf Cryo can expand its capacity beyond 2,000 MTPD, or about 750,000 metric tonnes per year, by bringing on an additional 750 MTPD regionally, of which 150 MTPD is in the UAE.
Sami Huneidi, a member of the Gulf Cryo Executive Committee in charge of investments, stated, “We have built our CO2 supply capacity to meet local and regional demand today and secure future requirements.” “Building robust local production capabilities while preserving the flexibility and backup of our wider regional network is our strategy as the largest supplier of liquid CO2 in the region.”
