A portrait of Donald Trump has been published on a coin in the United States, marking the latest step the president has taken to imprint his personal image on the nation’s institutions.

With the words “Liberty” and “In God We Trust” printed alongside a portrait of President Trump, the United States Mint released a new $1 (£0.74) coin on Wednesday to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States of America.

The United States Mint has stated that the coins, which are being sold as collectibles, are not being released into circulation for the purpose of daily use. Although it is against the law for living presidents to appear on United States money, a design clause in legislation that was passed for the occasion was exploited to circumvent this restriction.

Within a few hours of going on sale, the coins, which were priced at $61 for a roll of 25 and $154.50 for a bag of 100, were listed as “not currently in stock” on the website of the mint; nevertheless, it revealed that additional coins are being manufactured.

At the United States Mint outlet in Washington, District of Columbia, the coins were also being sold through vending machines. The BBC has requested additional information from the United States Mint, the Treasury, and the White House.

According to the United States Mint, the coin was “created to celebrate this historic national milestone” and features a “once-in-a-generation anniversary design that is destined to become a standout addition to modern collections.
