Authorities reported “major” damage on the small island of Rota after a “super typhoon” with the strength of a category-five storm tore through the US Pacific islands of Northern Marianas and Guam on Monday. With gusts of up to 180 miles per hour (290 kilometers per hour), the “entirety” of Rota was in the center of Super Typhoon Bavi, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), before it moved “ever so slowly away” westward. However, by midday, the collection of islands, which are several thousand kilometers (miles) west of the US mainland, were still being battered by strong winds and torrential rain, forcing the locals to stay inside.
The approximately 1,500 residents of Rota on X were advised by the NWS to “treat these imminent extreme winds as if a tornado was approaching and move immediately to an interior room or shelter NOW!” when the storm initially arrived early on Monday. Less than 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Guam, in the southernmost region of the Northern Marianas, local authorities on Rota reported “major damages,” although the extent remained unknown due to communication difficulties.We’re holding out.
