As he visited families following a spike in settler attacks, the US ambassador to Israel stated on Saturday that the Israeli government was accountable for the protection of West Bank Palestinians and should impose “severe consequences” over violence. After visiting a Palestinian-American home in the West Bank that has been frequently targeted by settlers, Mike Huckabee—a well-known ardent supporter of Israel and settlers—said he wanted to hear the community’s “legitimate grievances.”
In the village of Turmus Ayya, where about 80% of the 4,000 inhabitants are US citizens, the ambassador was meeting families inside a well-kept old house when a settler from a nearby illegal colony approached in a quad bike.Huckabee stated, “One of the messages we have been and will continue to send is that people in these communities have a right to live with a certain level of security and safety, and that the government has a responsibility to make sure that happens.”
Since 1967, Israel has controlled the West Bank. Violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinian inhabitants has continued for years, frequently with little to no legal repercussion. However, in recent months, attacks have increased in anticipation of the elections on October 27.
