Building a business in perfumery that stands out from the competition is no simple task. But leaders like Bader Nasser Marzooq are making this happen. In our interview with him, Bader shared about his journey and experiences that shaped him into the leader he is today.
As the Founder and Chairman at GHAFF, his vision has been simple yet strong: to build a brand that carries the Emirati soul, and stands confidently among the world’s finest perfume houses.
Spark Behind the Journey
We started the interview by asking, “Could you please share how you started your professional journey and events that shaped your current position?”
Bader shared, “My journey has been anything but linear. I spent over two decades working across industries from hospitality to banking and energy which gave me a deep understanding of people, discipline, and operations.
But fragrance was always something more personal. It wasn’t just a product to me; it was identity, memory, and culture. The turning point came when I realized that while the UAE is globally recognized for luxury, there wasn’t a strong Emirati fragrance house competing at the highest international niche level. That gap became my calling.
GHAFF was born from that vision to create a brand that carries the Emirati soul, yet stands confidently among the world’s finest perfume houses.”
Lessons in Leadership
Interested in learning more about his journey, we asked Bader Nasser Marzooq to share the lessons that shaped his leadership approach.
He responded, “One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that clarity of vision must come before growth. If you don’t know exactly what you stand for, scaling only amplifies confusion. Second, people don’t follow titles, they follow conviction. So your team needs to feel that what you’re building matters.
And finally, patience is underrated. In luxury, especially, you cannot rush excellence. Every detail, from scent composition to packaging, must earn its place.”
Adaptability Amidst Challenges
Every business has its set of challenges and leaders like Bader Nasser Marzooq can effectively handle the same. So, we asked, “Can you share the major challenges you faced while navigating this industry and how you overcame them?”
“The biggest challenge was not starting the business, it was building something that truly deserves to exist in a saturated market.
Perfumery today is crowded, but very few brands are memorable. The challenge was to avoid becoming just another name.
We addressed this by going deeper instead of wider, focusing on storytelling, ingredient quality, and emotional connection, rather than chasing trends. It required restraint, discipline, and at times saying no to opportunities that didn’t align with the long-term vision,” Bader explained.
Plans in Pipeline for GHAFF
To learn about the plans Bader Nasser Marzooq has set for GHAFF, we asked him to share a glimpse of the same with our viewers.
He mentioned, “Our focus is not to flood the market with products, but to create pieces that people connect with and remember.
We are building a curated collection of fragrances, each with its own identity, narrative, and craftsmanship behind it. Beyond products, we are also developing experiences in how people discover, interact with, and remember the brand.
In the long term, the ambition is clear: to position GHAFF as a globally recognized Emirati fragrance house that represents heritage, innovation, and refined luxury.”
Rising Impact of AI in Business
Nowadays, AI is everywhere, and businesses are increasingly adapting to it. To learn Bader Nasser Marzooq’s perspective on this, we asked him, “Can you share your thoughts on AI and its rising influence?”
He reflected, “AI is a powerful tool, but it should remain a tool not the identity of a brand. In our world, especially in perfumery, emotion, memory, and human intuition are irreplaceable.
That said, AI can enhance how we understand customers, personalize experiences, and operate more efficiently. The balance is important: use technology to support creativity, not replace it.”
Message to Aspiring Professionals
Lastly, addressing the beginners in this field, we asked Aubrey Heldt to share a few words of wisdom that could help them navigate through the industry.
Bader shared, “Start with intention, not imitation. It’s easy to follow trends or replicate what’s already working, but that rarely leads to something meaningful. Take the time to understand why you’re building what you’re building. That clarity will guide every decision you make.
Also, don’t underestimate consistency. Success is rarely about one big moment; it’s about showing up, refining, and improving over time.
And finally, be prepared for the long game. Anything worth building takes time.”
