Emirates has completed the first installation of next-generation Starlink Wi-Fi on its Airbus A380 aircraft, representing a huge leap in inflight connectivity. The A380, one of the first commercial airplanes to offer onboard internet, was previously equipped with equipment that delivered less than 1 Mbps. The new configuration, which includes three Starlink antennae per aircraft, increases connectivity capacity up to a thousandfold, providing a “better than at home” experience at 40,000 feet.
The first updated aircraft has returned to Dubai following installation and certification in Newquay, United Kingdom. More A380s are scheduled for rapid upgrades through 2026. The service will be provided free of charge to all passengers in all cabins and will be easily accessible. Future additions include live TV streaming via Starlink, first on personal devices and then on seatback screens.
Designed for the A380’s double-decker structure and huge passenger capacity, the system provides more than 2 Gbps of total bandwidth. To accommodate increased demand, the A380 has more wifi access points and a third antenna than the Boeing 777.
Starlink installations will commence at Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai, accelerating fleet-wide implementation. So far, 25 Boeing 777-300ER planes have been equipped with the system, and more than 650,000 people have used it.
