After rejecting Tehran’s most recent offering, which officials claimed included some nuclear concessions, US President Donald Trump declared on Monday that the Iran truce is on “life support.” In order to address the increased cost of fuel brought on by the war, Trump also suggested suspending the federal gas tax. The recent gunfights and stalled diplomacy may push the Middle East back into open conflict and prolong the global oil catastrophe that the conflict has caused. The United States is blockading Iranian ports, and Iran continues to control the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passageway for international oil and gas shipments.
When asked if the truce was still in place at the White House, Trump replied that it was on “life support.”After reading that piece of junk they sent us, I would say that it is now the weakest,” Trump continued. “I didn’t read it all the way through.” Additionally, Trump stated that he was in favor of suspending the federal tax on gasoline, which is currently slightly over 18 cents per gallon and 24 cents for diesel. The Republican-controlled Congress would need to give its approval. Every year, the tax generates more than $23 billion.
His promise was made following last week’s spike in gas prices above $4.50 per gallon. As soon as hostilities end, Trump said, the price of gas and oil will fall “like a rock.” Iran is advocating for a more restricted deal that would reopen the strait and ease the blockade before future talks, while Trump has called for a significant reduction of Iran’s nuclear program. Trump asserted on Monday that Iran had stated in its most recent ceasefire proposal that it would permit the United States to enter the country and assist in the extraction of its highly enriched uranium. He claimed, “They changed their minds because they didn’t put it in the paper.”
Iran claims it has the right to enrich and that its nuclear program is completely peaceful, thus it has not publicly promised to give up its uranium. Iran has offered to dilute some of its highly enriched uranium and send the remainder to a third nation, two regional officials told The Associated Press. In the past, Russia has offered to accept it. The officials discussed the delicate diplomacy under the condition of anonymity. During his visit to China this week, Trump is anticipated to encourage President Xi Jinping to put pressure on Iran. Beijing has leverage because it is the largest purchaser of Iran’s sanctioned crude oil.
