US President Donald Trump expressed his hope on Tuesday that the conflict between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan will end “very quickly,” following attacks by New Delhi’s military and a pledge of reprisal from Islamabad.

Trump remarked at the White House, “It’s a shame, we just heard about it,” after the Indian government claimed to have struck “terrorist camps” on the territory of its western neighbour, following a terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that claimed lives. Based on the history, I suppose they sensed something was going to happen. “If you really think about it, they’ve been fighting for centuries and decades,” he continued.

Since India and Pakistan gained independence from the British in 1947, they have engaged in three full-scale conflicts. Although they each administer different parts of the disputed area, they both make full claims to Kashmir.

Since gunmen killed 26 people in Indian-administered Kashmir, there had been widespread expectations that India would retaliate militarily. New Delhi has placed the blame on militants it claims were affiliated with the UN-designated terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is located in Pakistan. The Indian strikes, according to Pakistan’s army, targeted two locations in Punjab province, the most populated province in the nation, and three locations in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
