After President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to the area later this month, the United States has granted preliminary clearance to sell $3.5 billion worth of air-to-air missiles for Saudi Arabia’s fighter planes.
Trump is expected to announce more sales during his visit to the kingdom, including this one, which was announced early on Saturday. In an apparent attempt to persuade Trump to return to the kingdom for his first official visit as president, Saudi Arabia has already said that it intends to spend $600 billion in the US over the next four years. Trump temporarily visited Italy for the burial of Pope Francis.
Trump’s 2017 visit to Saudi Arabia broke with the custom of contemporary US presidents making their first international travel to Canada, Mexico, or the United Kingdom. His namesake real estate business has sought agreements around the region, further highlighting his administration’s tight links to the Rulers of the Gulf nations.
The arms transaction includes 1,000 AIM-120C-8 advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles, guidance sections, and further technical assistance. Tucson, Arizona-based RTX Corp will construct the missiles. The Royal Saudi Air Force has the second-largest fleet of F-15 fighter planes in the world, after the United States.
