
As diplomatic tensions between the two countries erupted in the aftermath of a fatal incident in Jammu and Kashmir, India said on Saturday that it has blocked the exchange of incoming mail and parcels and restricted the import of commodities coming from or passing through Pakistan. Additionally, the Indian government prohibited ships flying the flag of Pakistan from accessing any of its ports.
The Commerce Ministry said in a statement that all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan, whether or not freely importable or otherwise permitted, shall be prohibited with immediate effect until further orders.
This limitation protects public policy and national security. The announcement said that the Government of India must first approve any exemption to this rule. To prohibit direct or indirect import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan,” the notification dated May 2 said, adding a clause to the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023.
According to government figures, between April 2024 and February 2025, India’s exports to Pakistan decreased 56.91 percent year over year to $491 million, while imports were zero. Drug formulations, sugar, bulk pharmaceuticals, residual chemicals, and auto parts were among the top exports to Pakistan in FY25.
