His Highness is the chairperson. The UAE Cabinet met Monday at the UAE Government Annual Meetings location in Abu Dhabi, with Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the UAE’s vice president, prime minister, and ruler of Dubai, in attendance. Sheikh Mohammed referred to narcotics as a “societal cancer” and unveiled the National Anti-Drug Strategy during the conference.

The National Anti-Drugs Strategy (2024-2031), a comprehensive strategy that includes many programs and initiatives aimed at reducing drug-related mortality rates and achieving a drug-free United Arab Emirates by 2031, was authorised by the Cabinet. To lower relapse rates, the strategy intends to: strengthen border control against drug trafficking; arrest and apprehend drug dealers; actively participate in international counter-narcotics efforts; support at-risk individuals while utilizing their potential; establish safe treatment and rehabilitation facilities; improve employment opportunities for recovering addicts to lower relapse rates; and encourage the responsible use of potentially addictive prescription medications.

Sheikh Mohammed celebrated by posting on his X account: “Today, we approved the National Anti-Drug Strategy. Among other things, this plan builds correctional facilities, expands rehabilitation facilities, raises public awareness in all spheres of society, and fortifies efforts to discourage drug traffickers and sellers domestically and abroad. Drugs are a toxic force that causes addiction and hopelessness, making them the cancer of society. We must work together to counter this threat.
