Following Donald Trump’s announcement of a halt to “Project Freedom,” an effort to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif thanked the US president on Wednesday, citing “great progress” toward a comprehensive agreement with Iran as well as requests from Pakistan and other nations. The prime minister congratulated President Trump for his “courageous leadership and timely announcement” in a post on X.

According to Shahbaz, demands from Pakistan and “other brotherly countries,” especially the “Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and my dear brother Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Prince Mohammed Bin Salman,” prompted the development. He wrote, “The President’s gracious response… will go a long way towards advancing regional peace, stability, and reconciliation during this sensitive period.” Pakistan is “firmly committed to supporting all efforts that promote restraint and a peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy,” according to the prime minister.

The “current momentum will lead to a lasting agreement that secures durable peace and stability for the region and beyond,” he added. In an effort to strike an agreement with Iran to put an end to the Middle East conflict, US President Donald Trump earlier announced that he was ending the US military mission to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz after just one day.
