A five-person Special Investigation Team (SIT) was established by Kolkata Police on Wednesday to look into the fire that killed nine people, including two women and a child, at a hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in central Kolkata. Joint Commissioner (Crime) of Kolkata Police Kunal Agarwal told reporters that a Deputy Commissioner-rank officer who is presently assigned to the city police’s detective department will lead the SIT. A suo motu complaint has already been filed in the subject by the nearby New Market Police station, which has authority over the aforementioned hotel building. The State Fire Services Department had also filed a separate complaint regarding the issue.
After first responders put out the building’s early-morning fire, people gathered outside. However, the identities of the nine people who perished in the fire event have not yet been made public by the authorities. There are a number of affordable hotels in the Mirza Ghalib Street neighbourhood that welcome visitors from different states and even foreign nations. Bangladeshis may be among the nine people who perished in the fire because a significant portion of the guests staying in these hotels are from Bangladesh, a bordering country, travelling to Kolkata for medical tourism.
After visiting the scene of the fire, State Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul accused the private power generation and distribution company CESC Limited and the former Trinamool Congress government of being responsible for the incident.
