On Monday, President Donald Trump called for Iran to surrender and threatened to bomb Oman if it “gets in the way” of a US deal with Iran on the Strait of Hormuz. Trump told Fox News journalist Trey Yingst, “If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb the shit out of them,” referring to the ongoing negotiations between Oman and Iran over control of the strait, while Washington is also pursuing its own negotiations. The foreign ministry in Tehran announced earlier on Monday that the two countries were working on a joint declaration. Iranian and Omani officials have been discussing future marine navigation arrangements across the commerce route for weeks.
Even though transportation is still restricted, Trump has consistently maintained that the US controls the strait, which Tehran essentially blocked on February 28 at the beginning of the Middle East conflict. Iran responded to Trump’s Friday declaration that he would even proclaim the Strait of Hormuz to be a part of US property by saying that the vital energy waterway it has blockaded “will remain Iranian.” The Hormuz Strait was seen as an open, international waterway before the US-Israeli war against Iran began. Along with other commodities, it transports a sizable amount of the world’s energy shipments.
Tehran has used its successful takeover of the strait as leverage against attempts by the US to dismantle its military and compel it to give up a contentious nuclear power program. Oman is located on the south side of Hormuz, whereas Iran’s shore borders it on the north. Trump also stated that Iran should “put up the white flag of surrender,” according to Yingst’s X post about the president’s interview. Despite the widespread disapproval of the war among Americans, Trump maintained that he was not in a rush to make a deal ahead of the US midterm elections in November, when opposition Democrats want to unseat Trump’s Republicans in Congress.
