During a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the fringes of the G7 conference on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump made one of his boldest public declarations regarding defense ties with New Delhi, saying that the US would support India if it came under assault. After speaking with Modi, Trump made the comments in response to a question concerning the defense partnership between the US and India.Trump remarked, “I think it’s a great relationship.”I don’t need a contract to tell you this. There is no contract between us. Contracts must be written by you. However, we would be there to defend them if they were assaulted.”

The remarks were made when Trump frequently complimented Modi and emphasized the expanding cooperation between Washington and New Delhi. Then, making reference to the Indian Prime Minister, Trump personalized the statement. We’re going to be there if someone attacks that man,” he declared.I’m not sure if there is a new leader at this point. I’m not aware of any new leaders. However, we will be there to assist if they are attacked and he is the leader.”

Despite the fact that the two nations have progressively increased their military cooperation over the past 20 years, the United States and India do not have a formal mutual defense pact, which is why the comments attracted notice. Trump had before said that ties with India were quite strong. In particular, we had some excellent talks with India’s Prime Minister Modi,” he stated. There are numerous developments between the US and India. Along with expressing hope about current trade negotiations, the US President also highlighted the two nations’ growing economic relationship.
When asked about a potential trade deal, Trump responded, “We’re very close.”
