More than a day after the ship caught fire while travelling from Manila to the western province of Palawan, leaving over 80 people missing and five dead, Philippine firefighters discovered charred remains on a burned-out ferry on Friday. According to a Reuters report, rescuers retrieved 30 remains aboard a ferry that caught fire in western Palawan province on Friday, increasing the number of fatalities from the incident to 35.
Firefighters were unable to enter the ship, which was carrying over 130 people when it caught fire on Wednesday nite, due to thick smoke and intense heat.

Burnt remains were found in the ferry’s budget cabin, according to Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Noemi Cayabyab. The remains were being examined by police forensic investigators in order to retrieve and identify them. As of Friday morning, there had been five fatalities. Families who have been waiting for word of missing relatives for hours are further distressed by the discovery; some have expressed displeasure over the lack of information while the search has continued.
