On Wednesday, a top UAE official denied many unfounded allegations made in “desperate media campaigns” that he claimed were directed at the UAE. The “cancellation of labour residencies” and the “provision of financial facilities to Iran” were refuted in a statement by Dr. Anwar Gargash, the UAE President’s advisor. At a time when the government is concentrating its efforts “on addressing regional developments and preparing for the post-phase period,” the envoy claimed that certain platforms “are circulating false information about the country.”
Dr. Gargash stated that the allegations being circulated are “untrue,” but he also emphasized that the UAE feels that demonstrating concrete accomplishments is the best approach to address such assertions. This comes after a senior UAE official made a late-night statement denying any claims about the nature of the country’s business ties with Iran. Afra Al Hameli, the Director of the Strategic Communications Department at the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also declared that, due to the intensifying regional crisis, all financial, commercial, and trade contacts with Iran have been “halted until further notice”.
Her remarks were made just hours after two Iranian ballistic missiles were intercepted by UAE air defence forces on Tuesday, August 18. For the first time in 37 days, residents received an emergency alert on their phones; the advise was lifted in a matter of minutes. Both missiles, one inside the country’s waters and the other outside, crashed into the ocean. Later, the Ministry of Defence verified that marine navigation was the aim of the attacks.
