Following their meeting in Beijing last week, Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump announced that China will purchase 200 Boeing aircraft. China’s Commerce Ministry announced on Wednesday that the US will give China supply guarantees for aviation engine parts and components as part of the agreement. The ministry also stated that the two parties will seek tariff reductions on $30 billion (£22.4 billion) or more of items each, as well as an extension of the tariff truce they reached in October. Days after Trump’s visit, Xi was in meetings with Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, when the news was made.

Trump’s visit to China resulted in a number of trade commitments between the two largest economies in the world, such as the acquisition of Boeing and greater access to the Chinese market for American farmers. After departing China on Friday, Trump told reporters on Air Force One, “We made a lot of great trade deals, including over 200 planes for Boeing with a promise of 750 planes, which would be by far the largest order ever.” Kelly Ortberg, the CEO of Boeing, was a member of the US group that accompanied Trump to China. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, and Jensen Huang, the CEO of the massive AI chip company Nvidia, were also present. In a statement, Boeing said, “We had a very successful trip to China and achieved our major goal of reopening the China market to orders for Boeing aircraft.”
