As he looks for momentum to end the Gaza war after Israel killed the group’s leader, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken travels to Qatar on Thursday, a crucial Hamas mediator.

Blinken was travelling Thursday from Saudi Arabia to Doha, the capital of Qatar, to hear evaluations of Hamas’ position on a truce, two days after seeing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem.

After being repeatedly let down, Blinken is making his eleventh visit to the area since the October 7, 2023, Hamas onslaught on Israel in an attempt to put an end to the catastrophic Israeli retaliatory campaign in the Gaza Strip.

“The importance of determining whether Hamas is prepared to engage in moving forward, and the Egyptians, the Qataris are doing just that,” Blinken said of his conversation with Israel’s leaders.

As he departed Israel on Wednesday, Blinken told reporters, “But I think that with Sinwar gone, because he was the main obstacle for realizing the hostage agreement, there is a real opportunity to bring them home and to accomplish the objective.”

Critics, both domestically and internationally, claim that the Biden administration’s failure to exert pressure on Israel, which has benefited from an almost constant stream of US weapons worth billions of dollars, was just as much of a problem as Hamas.
