On Sunday, hundreds of firemen fought wildfires in Portugal, Greece, and Spain. Spain and Italy sent reinforcements to Portugal to assist with a major fire that had been blazing for more than three days. Due to hazardous smoke from a burning recycling plant that was consumed by a wildfire, authorities in portions of Thessaloniki, the second-largest city in Greece, advised citizens to stay inside and close their windows and doors.

West of Athens, the capital of Greece, another significant wildfire started on Sunday afternoon. According to the fire department, 210 firemen, supported by volunteers, specialized teams, and 29 aircraft—including helicopters and water-dropping planes—were sent to combat the fire that was spreading across the Mandra area’s pine forest. Before dusk, when planes are unable to conduct firefighting operations, authorities were rushing to contain the fire. According to the Civil Protection organization, more than 1,200 firefighters, supported by roughly 400 vehicles and 15 aircraft, attempted to put out a fire that started on Thursday in the Vouzela district in central Portugal. By Sunday, the wildfire had spread over 12,000 hectares (30,000 acres), according to data from the Copernicus satellite mapping arm of the European Union.

According to EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid, Spain reinforced Portugal on Friday with 120 firefighters and 45 trucks. Three firefighting aircraft from Spain and Italy were also despatched to assist. The fire seemed to be lessening by Sunday afternoon, according to Portuguese media, which quoted officials as saying that while there were still some hot areas, there were no longer any significant active fronts. According to the EFE news agency, a wildfire that started on Friday in the northeastern Girona region of Spain has destroyed around 2,200 hectares (5,400 acres). The fire has a perimeter of 40 kilometers (25 miles), according to Catalan Fire Service head of operations Eduard Martinez, and firefighters might not be able to contain it on Sunday, according to EFE.
