According to NASA, a meteor that was headed toward Earth burst above the northeastern United States on Saturday, causing booms that reverberated throughout the area with an intensity equal to 300 tons of TNT. According to a statement from the US space agency’s deputy news chief, Jennifer Dooren, the fireball broke up over northeastern Massachusetts and southeastern New Hampshire at 2:06 pm (1806 GMT).

She stated, “This fireball was a natural object and not a re-entry of space debris or a satellite, but it was not connected to any current meteor shower.”The loud booms are explained by the energy released at breakup, which is thought to be equal to around 300 tons of TNT.

According to Dooren, the meteor broke apart when moving at 75,000 mph (more than 120,000 kph) at a height of 40 miles. Social media users reported that the sudden loud booms were so strong that houses were trembling, frightening the locals. A fireball blazed above Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2013. According to NASA, the house-sized space rock exploded 14 miles above the earth, generating an explosion equal to 440,000 tons of TNT.
