Hours after the United States claimed to have stopped attacks on three Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz and retaliated against Iranian military sites, the United Arab Emirates replied to missile and drone strikes on Friday, further straining the precarious ceasefire in the Iran war. In the UAE, there were no immediate reports of damage. As its negotiators try to reach an agreement to put an end to the conflict, Iran and the US are trading punches, but they haven’t yet resumed full-scale combat. On matters like Iran’s nuclear program, which the US and Israel promised to stop when they started the war on February 28, or the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway that Iran has all but closed in an attempt to put pressure on the world economy, it’s unclear how near the two sides are to reaching an agreement.

Tehran announced on Thursday that it was reviewing the most recent US proposals to end the conflict that were sent to it through Pakistan, which is acting as a mediator.Trump downplayed Thursday’s gunfight between Iran and the US Navy. Trump referred to the retaliatory attacks against Iran as “just a love tap” during a phone conversation with an ABC reporter. He reaffirmed warnings of bombing if Tehran does not accept a settlement that permits the resumption of oil and natural gas exports disrupted by the battle, but he asserted that the ceasefire is holding and that a solution might come “any day.”He told reporters in Washington, “They have to understand: They’re going to have a lot of pain if it doesn’t get signed.” Iranian military engaged “the enemy” in gunfire on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian official television.

Late on Thursday night, it reportedly reported persistent defensive fire and loud booms in western Tehran. Since April 8, the US and Iran have essentially maintained their ceasefire. Last month, Pakistan sponsored face-to-face negotiations between the two nations, but no deal to end the conflict was reached.
