Following the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb near lines servicing the bustling Gare du Nord station in the French capital, Eurostar trains to and from London as well as other trains traveling north from Paris were halted on Friday. Police requested that traffic be stopped, according to a statement from France’s national rail operator, SNCF.
Passengers were urged to choose a different day to go after Eurostar, which operates passenger trains across the Channel Tunnel between Britain and the continent, canceled all of its services between London and Paris on Friday morning.
Travellers were advised to postpone their journeys by French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot, who stated that traffic would be “strongly disrupted” throughout the day with only minimal service starting in the afternoon.
Workers conducting earthmoving near the railroads in the Seine-Saint-Denis area found the bomb around four a.m. After being dispatched to the location, minesweepers are still working there. When the station opened on Friday, stranded travelers gathered there.
Serving international locations north of France, including the EU capital, Brussels, and the Netherlands, as well as the main Paris airport and other regional destinations, the Gare du Nord is a significant center for European transportation. Bomb remnants from World Wars I and II are frequently found throughout France, although they are uncommon in a place with so many people.
