President Donald Trump has threatened military action if the United States and Iran are unable to reach a new agreement during high-stakes negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program, which start on Saturday.

These will be the highest-level talks between the adversaries since Trump withdrew from an international agreement on Iran’s nuclear program in 2018, during his first term in office, and the agreement collapsed.

Discussions behind closed doors in Muscat, the capital of Oman, which has historically served as a mediator between Iran and Western nations, are expected to be led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff.

According to Iranian state television, Araghchi met with Omani officials on Saturday morning after his delegation landed in Muscat. Trump told reporters on Air Force One just hours before the start of the negotiations: “I want Iran to be a wonderful, great, happy country.” However, they are unable to possess a nuclear weapon.

Last Monday, Trump unexpectedly announced that the negotiations would begin. Tehran is “seeking a real and fair agreement,” according to adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Ali Shamkhani, who also stated that “important and implementable proposals are ready.
