According to a senior Iranian source, negotiations to resurrect the temporary agreement reached in June and establish a timeline for its implementation have not progressed, and Iran and the United States are still at odds over efforts to reach a permanent end to the Gulf War. Following more attacks on vessels in the area on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump delivered yet another diatribe against Iran’s leaders, severely undermining expectations for a settlement to the conflict. The June agreement, which called for a “immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts,” swiftly fell apart, with Iran’s foreign ministry calling it “suspended” a week later and Trump proclaiming it “over” on July 7.
Iran is accused by the United States of violating an agreement to reopen the crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping route. Tehran claims that Washington has broken its promises to freeze Iranian assets and lift a blockade of Iranian ports. “One of the issues that is being discussed via mediators is the US returning to the interim agreement and defining a time frame for implementing the commitments. There has been absolutely no progress on this issue,” Iranian sources added.
