President Emmanuel Macron admitted Monday to “failures in anticipation and intelligence” under pressure after violent protests in France, but the presidential palace said he refused to accept his interior minister’s resignation. Some opposition MPs had called for Nunez to be sacked after demonstrations over the cost of living spiralled into some of the worst urban riots in France for years.

Almost 2,400 people were arrested on Saturday and nearly 1,000 police and gendarmes were injured in widespread conflicts between police and protestors, major looting and burning, the interior ministry said. ““The interior minister handed his resignation to the president on Sunday,” the Elysee palace stated in a statement. But the president said no, “because of the need for continued leadership of law enforcement at this time.

The statement claimed Macron had urged Nunez to “take all necessary steps to ensure transparency over the failures in planning and intelligence that led to the violence.” The president also ordered him to “develop new operational methods for security forces” to address the issue.
