At the age of 84, Dick Cheney, a fiery conservative who rose to become one of the most influential and divisive vice presidents in American history and a key proponent of the invasion of Iraq, passed away.
Under President George H.W. Bush, Cheney led the armed forces as defense director during the Persian Gulf War. Later, under Bush’s son, George W. Bush, Cheney returned to public life as vice president.
He became a target of President Donald Trump years after he left office, particularly after his daughter Liz Cheney emerged as the top Republican critic and analyst of Trump’s last-ditch efforts to hold onto power following his election loss and his behavior during the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
In a television commercial supporting his daughter, Cheney declared, “In our nation’s 246-year history, there has never been an individual who was a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump. After being rejected by the electorate, he attempted to use violence and deceit to steal the most recent election and maintain his position of power. Dick Cheney announced last year that he was supporting Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, over Trump in a move that the Democrats of his time could never have predicted.
