Hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Moscow was planning a “massive attack,” Russian missile and drone attacks tore apartments in Kyiv early on Thursday, killing at least 13 people and injuring scores more. Russia has routinely blasted waves of missiles and drones into Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, during its more than four-year invasion, which has been Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II. More than a dozen explosions were heard by AFP journalists in central and eastern Kyiv, and they witnessed locals fleeing to metro stations, some of them with children and pets.
In the morning, citizens stood on the ruins of wrecked residential blocks, ripped open by the bombardment, while smoke poured over the Kyiv skyline.
Late on Wednesday, Russian missiles and drones began to bombard residential neighborhoods in the heart of the Ukrainian capital, causing blasts that continued until the early hours of Thursday. According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, there have been at least 13 fatalities and 86 injuries. Kyiv asked its allies to provide additional air defense. Residents gaze out of their broken window as an apartment building was damaged by a Russian missile during an aerial attack in Kyiv, Ukraine, on Thursday. AP “Don’t put off making choices about Ukraine’s air defense! This is our fundamental request to our allies after Kyiv suffered a night of horror,” Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga stated on social media. Russia fired 496 drones and 74 missiles — including hard-to-intercept ballistic projectiles — Ukraine’s air force said. It claimed to have shot down 476 drones and 48 missiles. Zelensky abruptly ended his trip to Dublin on Wednesday, citing intelligence information of an upcoming Russian assault, only hours before the attack.
