Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, declared on Monday that Air India will start operating direct flights from Guwahati to Dubai and Abu Dhabi on August 4. He described the announcement as a significant step in enhancing Assam’s international connectivity and establishing Guwahati as a major hub for travel and transit in the area. Chief Minister Sarma stated in a post on X that the opening of the two international routes coincides with the lifting of travel advisories for Assam by EU member states, creating new opportunities for the state to interact with the world community.creating new channels for Assam to interact with the world. The Chief Minister stated, “I am pleased to announce that Air India will start direct flights from Guwahati to Dubai and Abu Dhabi on August 4, just days after EU member states lifted their travel advisory for Assam.”
Sarma claims that the launch of the non-stop services will greatly improve access to Assam and the Northeast from abroad. The United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Singapore, and Bhutan would all be directly connected to Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport with the addition of the two flights. The state administration is still working to develop Guwahati’s international aviation network, according to the chief minister.
His next goal, he disclosed, is to enable direct airline services between Guwahati and Vietnam. He also promised to provide updates on the idea in due course. The move represents a significant step forward in Assam’s plan to enhance international connections, increase tourism, draw in investment, and make travel easier for students, businesspeople, and the sizable Assamese and Northeastern diaspora living overseas.
As part of its larger plan to make Guwahati the entry point to Southeast Asia, the state administration has made the development of international air connections a top priority during the last few years. Additionally, increased connection is anticipated to facilitate economic cooperation, commerce, and cultural contacts with neighboring countries.
