According to officials from both sides, Iran’s military were searching for a missing US pilot from one of two jets that were downed over Iran and the Gulf on Saturday, while two airmen were saved. Despite claims by President Donald Trump and his Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that US troops had complete control of the sky, the incidents highlight the dangers still facing US and Israeli aircraft over Iran as the war reached its sixth week.

The possibility that a US service member is still alive and on the run in Iran increases the stakes for Washington in a battle that has little public support among Americans and shows no signs of coming to a conclusion. A two-seat US F-15E plane was shot down by Iranian fire, according to officials in both nations, while an A-10 Warthog fighter aircraft crashed in Kuwait after the pilot evacuated after being struck by Iranian fire, according to two US officials.

According to two US sources who spoke to Reuters, two Black Hawk helicopters involved in the search for the missing pilot were struck by Iranian fire but managed to escape Iranian airspace. It was unclear how many crew members had been hurt. While the regional governor pledged to congratulate anyone who caught or killed “forces of the hostile enemy,” Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it was searching a southwestern region close to the pilot’s plane crash site.

Since the US and Israel started their attacks on February 28, Iranians who have been subjected to American air force have cheered the plane downings. The battle has been “downgraded from regime change” to a search for pilots, according to Speaker of the Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf on X. According to a senior administration official who spoke to Reuters, Trump has been in the White House getting briefings on the rescue operation. Requests for response were not immediately answered by the US Central Command or the Pentagon.

According to the Wall Street Journal on Friday, Iran has informed mediators that it is not ready to meet with US officials in Islamabad in the near future and that Pakistan’s efforts to broker a truce have failed. Since the initial attacks that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the conflict has claimed thousands of lives, caused an energy crisis, and threatened long-term harm to the world economy.
