Following an almost 13-year hiatus, Qatar Airways announced Thursday that it will begin operating three weekly flights to the Syrian capital, Damascus, starting on Tuesday.

The national carrier of Qatar said in a statement that it “is pleased to announce the resumption of three weekly flights to Damascus, Syria, from 7 January 2025.”

It was heralded as a “significant step in reconnecting the region,” around a month after Islamist-led rebels removed Bashar Al Assad, Syria’s longstanding leader, ending more than ten years of civil conflict.

Prior to the relaunch, Qatar Airways is ensuring that all operational, safety, and security requirements are fulfilled in close collaboration with the appropriate authorities, the airline stated.

“We are delighted to resume flights to Damascus, a destination of great historical and cultural importance,” stated CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer.

Last month, a Qatari source told AFP that Doha had assisted the new Syrian authorities in resuming airport operations in Damascus.

Following the fall of the Assad administration on December 8, Qatar became the second nation after Turkey to reopen its embassy in the national capital of Syria.
