After 13 years, Commercial Flights between Syria and Turkey are Once Again Available
After 13 years, Turkish Airlines’ flight from Istanbul to Damascus marked the return of commercial flights between Syria and Turkey on Thursday. Syrian families were seen applauding and chanting pro-opposition songs as they got ready to board aircraft TK0846 to Damascus while draped in their national flag, according to Turkish media.
Inside the aircraft, passengers sang the revolutionary anthem as they continued their festivities. “Hold your head up high, you are a free Syrian.” As he waited for takeoff, one man broke down in tears. After 12 years of living in Turkey, Fuad Abdulhalid remarked, “I missed Syria and am happy to fly back.
Nail Beyazid, a fellow traveler, expressed optimism as he prepared to make his first homecoming since escaping Syria.
“We are very happy that (Syria) was liberated, and the situation is perfect,” Beyazid stated. “We owned a factory and a house. We also had cars, but they are no longer around. We’re returning to have a look. Earlier this month, a Royal Jordanian Airlines aircraft made its first foreign commercial landing in Damascus since Assad’s overthrow.
