The US Geological Survey reported a shallow 6.7 magnitude earthquake in central Indonesia on Tuesday, with no early indications of injuries or damage.
The tremor hit east southeast of Palu, Central Sulawesi province, around 10:27 a.m.

The earthquake was felt powerfully in Palu and Sigi, although it did not cause a tsunami, according to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency.
Nurhaidar, a Palu resident who, like many Indonesians, goes by one name, was cooking in her kitchen when the earthquake struck.

Suddenly, there was a jolt, and the entire house began to tremble. “The entire roof was making noise, as if it were about to collapse,” the 42-year-old told AFP. I hastened to leave with all of the kids, and despite feeling dazed and confused for a time, we made it out.

Following Tuesday’s earthquake in Palu, Central Sulawesi, patients and family members evacuated from wards at Anutapura General Hospital. AFP
Indonesia, a huge archipelago in Southeast Asia, is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”. The arc of strong seismic activity, where tectonic plates clash, extends from Japan to Southeast Asia and throughout the Pacific Basin.
