Volker Turk, the head of UN rights, warned on Monday that artificial intelligence (AI) could grow to the point where it harms mankind. He also said he would encourage businesses to reduce risks in the coming days.

Turk warned that artificial intelligence (AI) could become powerful enough to threaten humanity and said he would urge companies in the coming days to reduce the risks. I’m advocating for a full-scale effort today to ensure AI’s safety and security before it’s too late.
Turk cautioned that a small group of guys had “almost unlimited power over AI,” without naming them. Google, OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic are among the leading AI firms.At the very least, we need nations that host AI and those engaged in its supply chains to unite around predetermined red lines,” he stated. Turk’s comments echoed earlier cautions about the extinction threats posed by AI from leading AI executives, such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The United Nations conducted its first global forum on governance in July and advocated for uniform regulations to lower the risks.
