A four-year ceasefire between the monarchy and the Iran-aligned group was broken on Monday when the Houthi movement in Yemen launched missiles at Saudi Arabia after accusing the kingdom of hitting an airfield under their control.
The spokesperson for a Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen stated on X that Saudi Arabia intercepted missiles “launched by the terrorist Houthi militia toward the southern region. Yahya Saree, a spokeswoman for the Houthi military, claimed that they had attacked the international airport in Abha, the city of a mountainous southern region of Saudi Arabia that borders Yemen and is a popular destination for Saudis seeking refuge from the summer heat.
Since an unofficial ceasefire was implemented in March 2022 in response to Houthi attacks on Saudi energy installations, the strikes are the first that the Houthis have claimed against Saudi Arabia. Following an April ceasefire in the Iranian conflict, Iranian drone and missile attacks targeting Saudi Arabia’s eastern areas and Riyadh decreased, but Monday’s violence threatened a new battle on the country’s southern border.
The nation fared better throughout the conflict because of its size in comparison to other much smaller Gulf states. It continued to export oil via a pipeline that crossed the Strait of Hormuz from its east coast to its west coast on the Red Sea. That might be challenged by a broader conflict with the Houthis, who have already targeted Red Sea vessels.
