As the US and Iran held indirect technical talks about the Strait of Hormuz in Qatar on Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance indicated that the talks were going well and that Washington will not go back to full combat until absolutely necessary. The conversations are based on a 14-point interim agreement that was reached last month with the goal of reopening the strait, ending the conflict that started with US-Israeli bombings on Iran in February, and establishing 60 days of talks for a long-term peace agreement.
However, the US and Iran have sparred publicly about the meaning of the interim accord, leading to tit-for-tat military attacks during the last week and leaving no prospect of progress on more complex matters, especially on Iran’s nuclear programme. Vance stated that, for the time being, President Donald Trump has instructed authorities to reach an agreement, but he could not guarantee that Washington would not resume full military operations before the deadline next month.I can’t promise to anything, because obviously it depends on what the Iranians are eventually going to do,” he told reporters on a visit to Virginia Beach, Virginia. “What I can commit to is: The president’s not going to send our military back in unless he has to, unless there’s a clearly defined purpose for it.”
Vance added, “It’s still pretty early, but talks are going well.” Technical discussions in Doha were centered on commercial shipping in the strait before moving on to Tehran’s nuclear capabilities. Iran is determined to achieve international acknowledgment of its authority over the crucial oil-shipping route and its power to charge taxes on ships entering or leaving the Gulf, even if it needs to do so by force, according to two senior Iranian sources.
The strait, which previously handled one-fifth of the world’s commerce in oil and liquefied natural gas, has seen a partial resumption of traffic. Trump told reporters on Wednesday that “the denuclearization of Iran is moving along well” without providing specifics. Trump has stated that eliminating Iran’s highly enriched uranium is a primary priority.
