Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon’s south were reported by the country’s official media on Thursday, only hours after it was announced that Israel and Lebanon had reached a conditional truce following talks in Washington.

Drone attacks along roadways at several southern locales were reported by Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA), which claimed that at least one of them resulted in fatalities. The Israeli military reported that air raid sirens were activated in northern Israel earlier on Thursday morning. One event involving a “suspicious aerial target” was addressed, while another incident turned out to be a false alarm.

Following a fourth round of US-led negotiations, Israel and Lebanon agreed to establish a ceasefire in Washington on Wednesday, but stated that it would require a “complete cessation” of firing by the Iran-backed Hizbollah, according to a joint statement.

The creation of “pilot zones” where the Lebanese military “will take exclusive control of the territory to the exclusion of all non-state actors” was another agreement between the two parties, which do not have formal diplomatic ties. Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel’s far-right National Security Minister, denounced the agreement as a “serious mistake” on Thursday.
