According to official media on Tuesday, President Xi Jinping has ordered a comprehensive probe after a bomb at a fireworks factory in China flattened buildings and sent towering clouds of smoke skyward, killing at least 26 people and injuring 61 more. Following the explosion on Monday at a factory compound in Liuyang, the city in central Hunan province known as China’s fireworks capital, more than 1,500 firefighters, rescuers, medical personnel, and police were deployed, along with drones and three robots, to search for survivors and manage on-site hazards.
Because of the danger posed by extremely flammable black powder kept in two warehouses within the complex, authorities evacuated the surrounding neighborhoods, according to Xinhua. According to Xinhua and CCTV reporting, the explosion occurred at Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company at approximately 4:40 p.m. (0840 GMT). A backdrop of verdant mountains was depicted in social media footage of smoke pouring out into beautiful blue skies. Reuters confirmed that the location of the video, which was shared on social media on May 4, was Changsha, the provincial capital of Hunan, which is in charge of Liuyang’s administration.
