India slammed US President Donald Trump’s post calling South Asia a “hellhole” on Thursday. The remarks came ahead of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s planned travel to India next month, during which he hopes to put an end to recent tensions between the two generally friendly countries.
The post falsely claimed that Indian immigrants in the computer business do not hire white native-born Americans and that they do not speak English well. A baby here becomes an instant citizen, and then they bring the entire family in from China, India, or some other hellhole on the planet,” the message read.
Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesman for India’s foreign ministry, said the remarks were “obviously uninformed, inappropriate, and in poor taste. They certainly do not reflect the reality of India-US ties, which have long been founded on mutual respect and common interests.”
Ami Bera, a Democrat who is the child of Indian immigrants, called Trump’s remark “offensive, ignorant, and beneath the dignity of the office he holds”.”President Trump, who was born into wealth and privilege, has never had to face the challenges that so many immigrant families have,” he stated. The Hindu American Foundation, an advocacy group, expressed concern about the “hateful, racist screed.
