Iran declared on Friday that it will take “devastating” action in response to any new US threats, following Washington’s promise to levy the harshest financial penalties ever in an effort to overthrow the Iranian government. The remarks made by US Treasury Chief Scott Bessent on Thursday came after President Donald Trump threatened to impose economic penalties on any nation that offered “any type of lifeline to Iran.” Bessent promised details on Monday.

Major General Ali Abdollahi, the chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, declared that the Islamic Republic would respond decisively and widely. Iranian media cited Abdollahi as saying, “Iran’s armed forces will respond to the enemy’s new threats with crushing, punishing, and devastating responses with preparedness across land, sea, air, air defence, and cyberspace.”

Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the influential speaker of Iran’s parliament and the nation’s principal negotiator in mediated talks with the United States, said Washington seemed to have concluded that it could not win a direct military conflict. During a visit to neighbouring Iraq, he declared, “We must make plans to deal with the unjust sanctions so that we can overcome them,” accusing Israel and the US of using “cognitive” and economic warfare.
