A mother and two children were hurt when a shooter opened fire at a school in southern Thailand on Wednesday, but Thai police shot and detained him, according to authorities. After initially claiming that the suspect in the Hat Yai shooting had been killed, Thailand’s Central Investigation Bureau claimed in a statement that police had shot him.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Public Health, a mother and a 14-year-old daughter were hospitalized after suffering gunshot wounds, and both had surgery.
It further stated that a second child “fell from a height,” resulting in an ankle injury.

At the Patongprathankiriwat School in Hat Yai, Songkhla province, Thai police detain a man. According to a statement released by the Songkhla provincial government, the suspect entered the Phatong Prathan Khiriwat School in “an agitated state while carrying a gun. According to the regional authorities, “about two to three gunshots were heard” shortly after he entered. The culprit was taken into custody, according to the national police.

Before hanging up, a school official informed AFP that she was present at the situation but was too afraid to speak. With an estimated 10 million weapons in use, or one for every seven residents, Thailand has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the area.
