Due to a wave of student protests that have rocked France, up to 500 schools will be shuttered entirely or in part on Monday, according to the education minister. Education Minister Edouard Geffray stated on Sunday that lessons will be “totally or partly suspended” in some “400-500” high schools since the security requirements “have not been fulfilled” and that 24 schools had been “burnt or ransacked” since the movement began.

He said that the closures are primarily a security measure in front of the massive demonstrations that the movement’s leaders have planned for on Tuesday. In addition to other complaints, the youngsters at French high schools, known as lycees, claim that their studies are being damaged by high rates of teacher absences, long school days, and run-down infrastructure. Geffray promised a “partial, progressive return to lessons” but said the number of schools impacted on Monday will be similar to the number from Friday. Valerie Pecresse, the right-wing head of the region, told radio Franceinfo that almost one-third of the 468 schools in the larger Ile-de-France region around the capital will be closed on Monday due to the protests.
